About ScholarshipMr. Johnnie was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, uncle, friend, and community activist. His life is a story of inspirational perseverance and of overcoming self-imposed obstacles. An army veteran, philosopher and deep thinker, Johnnie was often described as the smartest man in the room. He always had a smile and a good word for his fellow man. Being smart, however, did not keep him from challenges in his early years. As a young man Johnnie struggled with substance abuse and was incarcerated.
And that's where the real story of Johnnie Lee Gibson begins. Johnnie understood the importance of education to self-improvement and, while incarcerated, he committed himself to improving his formal education. He earned an Associate Degree from San Diego City College, and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Master of Arts Degree from San Diego State University. While attending San Diego State University, Johnnie earned the distinction of being a member of the Mortar Board Honor Society. He also proudly served as a first responder with the San Diego Fire Department and as a Drug and Alcohol counselor for many years prior to his retirement at age 65. The Johnnie Lee Gibson Scholarship was created to honor these outstanding characteristics and will be awarded to students who exemplify a deep sense of community involvement and leadership.
